About Reliability in Action

Reliability in Action is built to make reliability and maintenance calculations easier to understand and apply.

Why this site exists

Reliability and maintenance metrics are simple arithmetic wrapped in difficult definitions. Two plants can compute “availability” with the same formula and arrive at numbers that are not comparable, because they counted downtime differently or used a different observation window. Most online material gives the formula and stops there.

This site takes the opposite approach. Every calculator shows the substituted formula, the assumptions that sit behind it, how to read the result, and where the number stops being meaningful.

Who it is for

Maintenance and reliability engineers, plant engineers, maintenance supervisors and planners, and engineering students who need a working answer plus enough context to defend it in a review meeting.

Editorial principles

  • Practical usefulness first. Content is written to help you finish a calculation or settle a definition argument, not to fill a word count.
  • Transparent assumptions. Where a metric depends on a definition choice, we say so instead of presenting one convention as universal.
  • No hidden formulas. Every calculation is shown in full, with the numbers you entered substituted into it.
  • No invented benchmarks. We do not publish “world class” thresholds or industry averages unless a source is stated.
  • Corrections welcomed. If something here is wrong, ambiguous, or misleading, we want to know and we will change it.

What this site is not

It is not a substitute for site-specific procedures, applicable standards, OEM guidance, or competent engineering judgment. Results are informational and should be validated against your own governance before they drive a decision.

Status

Version 0.1 — Founding build.

The current build covers four calculators and three KPI guides. Maintenance guides are being written and will be published as complete articles rather than placeholders.
